On Tuesday 22 October, the Autonomous Minister for Health, Alba Vergés, presented the Charter of Commitment to gender equality at the closing of the first Gender Summit in Health Sciences at the CaixaFòrum Girona. Luis Serrano, director of the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), and the directors and representatives of the 19 health research centres and institutes of Catalonia, signed the document and attended the summit in order to make an active contribution to improving female leadership in this domain.

The Charter includes 12 commitments to do away with gender inequality in the research system in Catalonia. The agreements reached include, among others, tackling vertical and horizontal inequality in wages for the same responsibility and professional position; doing away with the obstacles that prevent women from advancing in their scientific career and promoting changes in organisational culture and professional structure in order to do remove systemic barriers, stereotypes and inequalities. Moreover, the decision was taken to implement a plan of work that will be deployed over a one-year period in order to accelerate the advancement and leadership of women in health research.
