En aquesta imatge, obtinguda per Verónica Rodilla (IMIM) al servei de microscòpia confocal de la UPF, podem veure una secció d'intestí prim d’un ratolí amb càncer, amb marcatge de Jagged1 (verd) i dels nuclis cel·lulars (vermell). Jagged1 és un lligand de la via de Notch que es troba normalment ancorat a la membrana. Quan el receptor Notch s'uneix al lligand Jagged1, aquest últim s'endocita perdent la seva localització de membrana.
La via de Notch és clau en la proliferació i la diferenciació de les cèl·lules de molts teixits, i està implicada en molts processos tumorals. En aquest cas, la imatge mostra com les cèl·lules epitelials normals de l'intestí expressen Jagged1 a la membrana (fletxa). En canvi en el teixit tumoral (asterisc) la distribució de Jagged1 canvia i apareix a dins la cèl·lula, com a conseqüència de l'activació de la via Notch.
Finding Jagged
In this image obtained by Verónica Rodilla (IMIM) in the confocal microscopy service of the UPF, we can see a section of the intestine of a mouse with cancer, with Jagged1 (green) and cell nuclei (red) labelled. Jagged1 is a ligand of the Notch pathway that is normally anchored to the membrane. When the Notch receptor binds Jagged1, this ligand loses its membrane localization and goes into the cell.
The Notch pathway is crucial in the proliferation and differentiation of cells in many tissues and it is involved in many tumour processes. In this case, the image shows how normal epithelial cells of the intestine express Jagged1 in the membrane (arrow), while its distribution changes to the inside of the cell in the tumour tissue (asterisk), as a result of the activation of the Notch pathway.
