El ´western blot´ que l’Andrea Senna (CRG) estava fent com a part del seu projecte de recerca li va fer recordar la pintura “El crit” d’Edward Munch, exemplificant l’estret lligam que existeix entre la recerca i la creació. És la ciència un art? O és l’art una ciència?
El ´western blot´ és una tècnica de biologia molecular molt comuna utilitzada per observar les proteïnes presents en una cèl·lula. Les proteïnes es carreguen en un gel i, quan s’aplica una corrent elèctrica, migren cap al pol positiu. Les proteïnes més grans migren més a poc a poc, mentre que les petites avancen més ràpidament i arriben més lluny. Després les proteïnes es transfereixen a una membrana de nitrocel·lulosa on es fan visibles a través d’anticossos marcats.

A western blot is a common molecular biology technique used to observe the proteins expressed in a cell. The proteins are loaded into a gel and, when an electric field is applied, they migrate towards the positive pole. The larger proteins migrate slowly, while smaller proteins can move faster and further. Once the proteins have been transferred to a nitrocellulose membrane they are made visible and recognised with antibodies.
