The animal house at the PRBB, covering 4,000 m2, comprises six independent units, which are connected and run under a single management:
• Aquatic animals area, with a capacity for 50,000 zebra fish, 500 frogs (Xenopus laevis), and a hundred axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum).
• Barrier zone, capable of supporting 60,000 specific pathogen germ free (SPF) mutant mice housed in modern autoventilated microisolators. In addition, it has three support laboratories.
• Transgenesis area, with large laboratories (250 m2) for the application of traditional and the most innovative techniques, allowing the production of genetically modified mice. There are also rooms to keep up to 5,000 animals.
• Experimental area, with laboratories for in vivo imaging, behaviour rooms, operating rooms and an irradiator. In addition, it has two large animal houses with a capacity for up to 8,000 mice kept under barrier conditions.
• Quarantine animal house with its own access changing rooms, embryonic transfer re-derivation laboratory, cleaning and sterilisation area and four different rooms to house up to 5,000 mice in modern microisolators.
• Conventional animal house located in the building at 80 Dr. Aiguader street, which is connected via a tunnel with the PRBB, and has a surface area of 1,000 m2, where up to 5,000 rodents are kept, mainly for neuropharmacology and immunology studies.
The PRBB animal house is a technical-scientific unit serving the groups of the centres that use animal models in their lines of research.
